Toshiba's HD-DVD Production Soon

    Toshiba and NEC's wide-spread production of the next generation dvd disc, entitled "High Definition Digital Video Disc", will be ready first half of next year - simultaneously launching with similar recordable drives... The new technology will allow users to store 30 Gigabytes of data on a single disc... the technology differs in the wavelength of the laser used to record the discs... standard dvds, holding only 4.7 Gigs of data, use 'red' laser technology at 650 nanometers... The new 'blue' laser technology uses a 405 nm wavelength, allowing recorded tracks to be closer together yielding higher capacities...
    Competitor 'Blu-Ray', currently being developed by Hitachi, LG, Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Thomson, is more complex; but allows for storage of up to 54 gigs a disc... Full Story
